I have installed an external HD and have followed the instructions as per J Kost video --
What are trying to do....the above sentence tells us nothing. Adding a drive to your system and putting folders on it will not show up inside LR. LR cannot see files and folders that are created or moved "outside of Lightroom" (i.e. with Mac Finder or Windows Explorer). New files and folders must be Imported for LR to see them. Never move or rename existing files and folders from outside LR for the sole purpose of "reorganization." But you can easily move complete folder structures (i.e. My Pictures folder) from an internal drive to an external drive from outside LR and then reconnect it:
Lightroom is a Database Cataloging system for images. It is not a File manager like Finder. The only way for that drive to show up in Lightroom is to put images on it then Import those images into LR.
You can Add a folder to a drive in LR by clicking the Plus sign in the Folders area in the Library module and that will open a File Manager, Finder, window where you can select which drive to add the folder to. You should then be able to select that new external drive.
Drives are only listed when they are actually used.
You need to either import an image from that drive or "find a missing" file or folder that was moved to that drive.
I am attempting to move some of my photos to this external HD - My internal drive is almost full. I would like to be able to store and access all of my photos on this HD. Is this possible.
I suggest moving ALL of your photos at the same time from their current location (Pictures folder) to a folder with the same name (Pictures) on the external drive without changing anything! Next reconnect the old 'Pictures' folder inside LR by following the procedure here:
I highly suggest keeping a backup copy of your 'Pictures' folder and the LR catalog(s) on a separate drive (i.e. internal drive, or 2nd external drive) and update it on a regular basis (weekly, after editing many image files, etc.) to. There are many posts in this forum with the title 'My computer (or hard drive) Crashed and I lost all my pictures....HELP!!!!!
Make sure the external drive is included in the Time Machine backup.
Thanks for your response -- however I think I am missing something -- When I hit the + in the Folders box -- and then add a folder -- it brings up "my devices" I then select the name of my new external HD --- I add a folder -- I create ad "New Folder" on this device call it Photos -- I click on Choose which returns me to lightroom --
I would expect at this time that my new external drive would appear either above or below my Macintosh drive. It does not --- I appears only as another folder under a folder titled Voumes. I am lost ---
I really appreciate your assistance
Right-click on the LR 'Photos' folder and select 'Show Parent Folder.'
