"RAM Preview needs 2 or more frames" error in 12.2.1.5

    TalkMotion Level 1

I'm getting this problem on 12.2.1.5 - it says on the about AE screen that I'm only using 12% of 8GB.

What happens if you try it in version 13.2?

What are your other system specs? What OS? How long have you used AE without this issue happening on this computer?

AE CC 2014 doesn't even allow me to ram preview, so I have stayed back a version until they update and fix it.

            I'm on a MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3. NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M 1024 MB. 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. with a 250 GB SSD.

All of my problems with the Adobe software started when upgrading to mavericks and again to yosemite.

You've got a pretty small amount of RAM, but you should still be able to use AE to RAM preview a little bit! Does CS6 behave properly?

What are you doing when you get this error? Do you get it frequently? Is it only in one comp, is it in one project, is it in every comp, every project, every time?

Can we see a screenshot of your memory and multiprocessing settings?

Yosemite has a major issue with RAM previews. It'll skip a bunch of frames at the beginning, but when the RAM preview loops, it should play just fine. For most folks it's an annoyance, but still workable. Unfortunately, this is an issue on Apple's end and not one they seem overly keen to fix. Happily, Adobe has announced that they have a something in the works that will solve the problem - the issue is that it requires completely rewriting how AE does previews. So...a major rewrite of AE's core code.

The good news is that this major change is coming in the spring! Huzzah! The bad news is that "spring" might mean June. However, I would rather it be later and have fewer bugs than be rushed out to the masses full of crashes.

CC and especially CC 2014 should work just fine on Mavericks. There are very few issues being reported with that. Yosemite has numerous issues being reported all over the place from folks who aren't even using Adobe products... If I were in your position, I would seriously consider rolling back to Mavericks if at all possible. I haven't upgraded to Yosemite for a multitude of reasons.

A thought has occurred. Mac OSX always seems to screw up permissions when you upgrade the OS. That often results in a number of odd problems. Try this to see if it helps: fixing permissions problem that impedes start of Adobe applications

Thanks for being so quick to respond by the way.

Yes permissions have been a pain in my side. I literally just had to reset permissions for PrePro CC 2014 (immediately after installing) just now to resolve a start up crash. But I've already gone through a lot of the system files for AE CC and its 2014 version and reset the permissions. maybe I didn't get enough of the files.

I'll agree apple has not been the same since Jobs died. the ram for instance. I bought the retina thinking that I would be able to replace the ram like I was able to with the previous macbook pro or any other computer for that matter. Obviously, I was wrong. They've soldered/glued everything in and if I want to upgrade the ram, which I do, I'll have to get an apple specialist to do it for a ridiculous fee.

sorry for my rant. I'll update this when I find a solid fix.

I'm sure! 8 is very little for AE work. However, as I said in my first post, you should still be able to work.

Will do. These forums have helped me out a ton in the past so I'm definitely going to keep that motion going. Thanks again!

a few things all happened at once, but I've managed to get it working. I updated AE, went into the hidden library folder and changed the remaining AE folders permissions to "read and write" (there are other threads with files paths for you to reference if need be) from "ready only" and I also changed something in the preferences. I checked off a box in "video preview", "Memory and Multiprocessing" or "Media and "Disk Cache"

I think the best solution for anyone having this issue, would be to do a manual reformat of the OS system. Meaning don't restore the OS from a time machine backup. and after the computer is up and running, drag all your files from your External HD manually. The system files got pretty messy (developer side) from upgrading the software since the previous versions.

                        Hope this helps!

I'm using CC2014 13.2.0.49 and I'm still having the same issue since CS6.

I've paired down my project to no audio, no third-party plug-ins and an 8 bit project. I’m not using ray-traced 3-D rendering. I’ve closed all other apps. I’m not using multi-processing nor does it help if I do. I've got 6GB of ram allocated to other apps. I’ve fixed permissions and trashed preference. Re-starting the app restores the RAM but then it slowly leaks away until I have to re-start again. Purging memory helps only a little.

                          I’m on running OS X version 10.9.5, 2 x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, Memory 32 GB 1066 MHz DDR3

                          Please help!

                          Thank you

If it doens't fix your issue, I would first backup your computer with time machine; and simply do a manual reformat of your computer. so wipe it, and manually drag and drop your files/documents and setup all the files, plugins, and software from scratch. I've heard that upgrading the apple operating system from older versions has resulted in some sloppy development related issues like this.

…seems apple is slowly being more and more like windows.

I'd look more into that; and perhaps look to do a re-install of the adobe software if it doesn't work otherwise.

I did a complete wipe and re-install of everything. That finally did it. I'm guessing it's an old plug-in that's causing trouble and will report back if I figure it out. It's possible it was an old Kona card that I was causing it too.

                                  Thank you.

The issue has popped up for me again. It seems that although 8 gb of ram is low for me, it's also not enough. Thought I'd pass along this info.
