Formatted InDesign checkboxes look horrible when exported into Acrobat

I've got a document in InDesign CS6 with a bunch of checkboxes, formatted through the Object Styles panel. The checkboxes are fairly normal-sized 0.23 in. When I export the document into Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, they turn into gigantic squares. If clicked, they revert back to the look I set in InDesign, but only until I select another field, and then they bulge out again. The only way to fix this is to manually resize these checkboxes in Acrobat---but that completely defeats the purpose of building the form in InDesign.

I tried to find a solution online, but I didn't come across this particular issue.

Has anyone encountered this issue before? Is there a solution?

      Thank you.
