    ActiveX in Shockwave

    forget_r
      hi,

I'm have created a director with a activeX control insert. All is working fine til i tried to publish it as a shockwave. The activeX doesn't seems to be copy together with the shockwave itself.

      regards

ActiveX is not shockwave safe, so you can not use ActiveX controls in
any shockwave movie in a browser. This is for security reasons.
Imagine the harm you could do if you were allowed to use an ActiveX
control that deletes people's files for instance.

Certainly running ActiveX within shockwave can posed a huge threat to all users, but why not give the user a option instead?

Currently i'm trying to access a database through shockwave and i have found two ways of doing so,

            1) ActiveX control
            2) Using XDK, compile as a Xtra. However i read that you would need to compile them into "safe to use" in shockwave before it can be deploy

So is there any possible means to access databases through shockwave? thks

            regards

What format/type is the DB you need to communicate with?
Since you are trying to do this from Shockwave why not use some sort of
server-side interface language like PHP, asp, ... ?

Not too sure if i'm getting you, you are saying to use asp(for example) in director itself? if so, is there anywhere i can start off with?

No, I'm suggesting running ASP on a/your server and using
getNetText()/postNetText() to communicate with ASP pages.

Oh, sounds like the solution for my headache, i would probably spend some time on shocknet, and hopefully thing works fine,

                    Thanks

                      hi,

i have just finishing reading through the
                      http://www.shocknet.org.uk/defpage.asp?pageID=57

However, although it does mention on how to post a query, but i can't seems to find ways to retrieve any result of my query, (in the example above, it does most of the thing except for telling me how to get the result ). i do knows that it gotten do with getNetText() but i really have no idea of how to do that. Anyone can share some pointers?

                      Thanks and regards

Check the docs for getNetText, postNetText and netTextResult

I'd say ask George Bush that question...

But, really, server side programming is an option as mentioned but you can
also look into the several database Xtras that work over the web. They're
                          pretty convenient.

Thanks guys, i finally manage to get the database connection stuff working. Have been going through hell lots of problem as it's my first experiences with Lingo and director. I'm would also apologise for posting without going through the entire shocknet.
