i currently have mountain lion os but I want to upgrade to Yosemite..I'm new to the mac world so I just want to make sure. If I install cs3 on mountain lion then upgrade to Yosemite, then upgrade to cs4 would it work?

It should work on Mountain Lion, at least Photoshop CS3 is reported to be okay OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) Compatibility | PHOTOSHOP.COM BLOG

But if you then upgrade to Yosemite, there may still be the java SE 6 issue. I don't know if upgrading alleviates that. If you try it, let us know how it works.
