What you're describing is called a Table of Contents. (Most people call it a TOC.)
The most important question, however, is how much you want in each TOC entry. For instance do you want just the lines of short paragraphs, or a few words from longer paragraphs. a few words from longer paragraphs is much, much, much harder to do.
However, it is mandatory when creating a TOC that you apply paragraph styles. If you can't do that, you need to learn that first and then go on to the TOC.

I think I'll use cross reference, because it seems quicker than TOC since I don't have a book but a few pages dvd booklet.
