I am considering overclocking my current system, as playback of 4K R3D files is at times slow, with the CPU reaching 100%.
I have never overclocked a system before and am wondering what would be a good CPU frequency to aim for? Would going from 3.5GHz to say 4GHz be substantial enough or should I be aiming higher for flawless real time playback?
I am also wondering if it would be worth overclocking the RAM and GPU also?
i7 5930K @ 3.5 GHz
4GHz is where the performance jumps for GPU acceleration. That is what I would aim for. The 8 Core chip handles R3D 4K files far better than the 6 core because of the GPU accelerated debayering. Don't OC the ram unless it's rated for a higher speed. The issues you can get from ram errors are often extremely difficult to isolate. If you bought 2133 then keep the ram at that speed.
You cannot overclock the memory (the only adjustment that really makeany difference) on a GTX 970. When you run a CUDA application like Premiere the memory clock falls back to 6000/3000/1500 MHz despite any adjustments you make to it.
The OP is talking about the system ram and not the video ram.
