Are you in the Import dialog window? Is it then listed on the left and can you select it to import from it?
The drive will not show up in the Library module until you have imported images from it.
no i cannot see it on the left to import from or right to import to.
I have 4 drives. The other 3 are listed fine.
I know this is a little digression from the original question, but putting photos on a SSD doesn't really speed up your workflow, other than by a trivial amount. See this study by Ian Lyons: Will an SSD Improve Adobe Lightroom Performance? | Computer Darkroom
You'd be better off putting the Lightroom catalog file and cache on the SSD and the photos on an external hard drive.
agreed. Lrcat on SSD, RAW files on mass storage sata drive.
But this dosent solve my problem. LR is not seeing my SSD and that isnt right.
I am beginning to think its the drive itself. Its bugging my whole system and although I sent it Samsung for repair, they haven't stated what was carried out by third party Hanaro, just sent it back.
Anyone else had a similar issue ?
Please clarify what this means: "so i was able to create a catalogue there." Did you create a Lightroom catalog file (*.lrcat) on the drive? Then in the Windows 8 navigation window opened from File/New Catalog you did see the drive, but in the Import dialog window, when you open the From menu (upper left corner) and select Other Source, it does not appear in the Windows navigation window? And similarly, when you open the To menu (upper right corner) and select Other Destination, it cannot be found in the navigation window?
Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.
And you tried to find it through the Other option?
just tried this other option, not a method I normally use.
I can locate it this way. and it will accept imports onto this drive. First I have to select the Destination + arrow (in the main destination window) and select this drive and/or a subsequent folder within. It then appears as an option up top.
But I dont understand why it is not listed in the main desitaion window with the other drives and folder etc ?
and thats the answer !
thanks for the link and feedback. Changing B to S allows Lightroom to see it. Blimey. That simple.
Thanks everyone and thanks trshaner
Glad to help. Only us old-timers remember those drive letters were reserved for floppy drives and legacy-support lingers on. I've got a floppy drive (A:) on my old Windows XP system, but long ago transferred all my floppy disks to CDs. Haven't used one in many years!
I have a similar problem. I bought a new SSD drive. LIghtroom does not see in in the list of drives on the left. It can see all my other drives. However, LR finds it if I try to import from the SSD drive. I am using a 2016 Mac Pro and CC.

Do you mean the Folder Panel in the Library Module, or something else?
However, LR finds it if I try to import from the SSD drive.
This is normal, and after the import, do you see the SSD in the Folder Panel of the Library Module?
Side issue: there's really no value to putting your original photos on the SSD. This is very expensive real estate, that will not produce a noticeable speed improvement when you try to perform tasks on the photos. Better you should put your catalog file and previews on the SSD.
