The Flash 8 xtra is part of the upgrade to Director 10.1. Here is a
link to the page about the updater
Assuming you have Director 10 now (Director MX 2004), you can download
and install the update from there. Then you can use the Flash 8 xtra.
What isn't compatible? Is there a list ov what doesn't work so I won't waste my time?

well there was a lenghty discussion of this very question on tom higgins' blog, but it's all gone now that he's no longer the head director honcho. one thing that comes to mind is capturing button clicks. w/ the flash 8 xtra you have to use setCallback.
i don't remember the details of the old vs new code, sorry. i'm really dissapointed they took all the comments out of tom's blog. there was a lot of useful stuff from a wide range of director developers. over 50 posts on this very subject if i recollect rightly.
anyway, seems like most problems were reported w/ flash components not imported swfs so maybe you'll have no issues. if you do post here, somebody'll be able to help out i'm sure.
I just wish there was a difinitive answer as to the future of Director. I prefer it over Flash (even though its not as lightweight)...

What constitutes definitive?
A release date for the next version of Director... Even if its pushed back, that would at least indicate that a new version is eminent.
While they have not released a firm date, they have said:
However, our current planning assumption is that the next major release
of Director will be in the second half of 2007.
