In the LR Preferences> General tab click on 'Reset all warning dialogs.' Then when using Edit in PS this should pop-up:
Click on 'Render using Lightroom.'
If the above is not the issue please provide OS, PS, ACR version, and camera model you are using.
Yes, brilliant! That fixed it. It also explains why my pics coming back from PS still use 8-bit color even though I specified 16-bit in the LR prefs. Thanks!
If using PS CS5 or earlier you'll have to use the 'Render Using Lightroom' option. If using PS CS6 you need to update to ACR 8.8, which is fully compatible with LR5.7.

When using Edit In with 'Open Anyway' (your previous setting) the file is processed using PS's ACR and not LR's ACR. Your PS ACR preferences must set to 8 bit color. You can change it to 16 bit by opening an image with PS ACR and clicking on the Workflow Options at the bottom of the panel:
