    Problem with Editable Link to Website

      I have been looking at the editable link method described in the http://www.grainge.org/pages/authoring/customising/editable_links.htm site. It's very cool!

      However, I can't seem to get an editable link to a website to work without the graphic.

      I have downloaded all the javascript files, copied the javascript code into the RoboHelp topics and made sure the javascript files were in the RoboHelp baggage files.

      In the custom_linklist_chm.js file, I added the following line which creates a link with a graphic and the website opens perfectly from the help topic:

      addLinkExternal("samplewebsite.htm"," http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp","learn.jpg","Click here");

      But when I try to add a line that would create a text link instead of a graphic link in the topic, the link cannot find the site. Here is the line I added.

      addLinkExternal("samplewebsite.htm"," http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp",null,"<p>Click here</p>");

      When I clicked on the link in the topic, I saw the following message.

      "Cannot find 'file:///C:/Microsoft_HTML_Help/ http://www.w3schools.com/default.asp'. Make sure the path or Internet address is correct. "

      Can someone tell me what I might be doing wrong? Thanks so much!

      Sarah

          I am seeing the same problem.

          This method was developed by one of my colleagues and it was created for use with webhelp where both graphic and text links work OK. Subsequently it was amended to work with chm files and this problem does only occur with compiled help.

          You will see from all my other topics with javascript methods that I always give credit to those involved in writing the scripts. To my embarrassment, I have not done so on this occasion so I am not sure if it was my colleague or someone else on this forum who made the changes.

          Unfortunately I wll be out of the office for about ten days and the developer only visits the office occasionally so it could be a while before I can talk to him about this. Also, unless it is a quick fix, I doubt he will be able to look at it for a while.

          Until then I can only suggest that you create a graphic of the text you want!

            That's what I was thinking - a graphic with the text! Links to Word and pdf files in folders inside and outside the chm file's folder seem to work fine; this was the only thing I could not get to work. It's still a really cool method, though. Thanks! Sarah
