What version of ID are you using? OS? Where do you see a message that says you need it?
InDesign documents with this plugin embedded are generated from a data management system called STEP Trailblazer from Stibo Systems. 2 years ago I worked on a catalogue with INDD docs sent to me from this system on CS5 and managed to source a CS5 InDesign (mac) plugin that worked fine. However I'm now working on files supplied are from CS6 and I'm using CC and haven't been able to source a plugin. I'm not sure if a CS6 plugin exists for Mac, and have been told they are developing a plugin for CC Windows only.
In my experience the plugin is not required to open / edit / save documents. However without the plugin, the InDesign Book function cannot be used. In my case, working on a 300+ page catalogue, this is a major pain. Cutting / pasting the contents from the step-n-design doc to a new document works...but is obviously time consuming and potentially dangerous. Would be interested to hear if you do source the plug in or find another solution.
