I'm having the same problem of not being able to edit text with Contribute 4. CSS layout, template based, editable instances. Strange in that there are two areas set up as editable areas, navigation and main content. Only the navigation area can be edited but not the main content? Frustrating to say the least. These areas can be edited when using Contribute 3. Navigation comes before main content if that helps.
What do I have to do to fix this problem outside of going back to Contribute 3?
The answer is yes, all of the text on the page is affected. The navigation and footer are pulled in via though a php include.
I've had a problem like this, not just text but any editable item could not be selected if it was inside a container that had the css property overflow: hidden applied to it.
I had one div with overflow:hidden. I removed the overflow and still cannot edit the text.
This is very frustrating. I have pages created with DWMX that work with Contribute 3 just fine in that we can edit anything on the page that is in an Editable Instance, no problem. With Contribute 4, geez Adobe, this does not occur. Places I can edit with Contribute 3 I can't with Contribute 4. Why? Why doesn't Adobe care? How come there isn't someone from Adobe in this forum to answer these questions? My apologies to everyone for my rant.

Does anyone have an answer?
I have finally figured out the issue. Thanks Chris5337, you started me down the correct path. It turns out that there was an issue with padding. The Padded div tag actually "covered up" if you will all the other divs that held the text. Once I got rid of the padding I could select any text I wanted.
