If I buy Lightroom 6 and CC & decide to cancel the CC part in 12 months will I lose the updates accrued during the year
No, all of your work remains intact when the CC subscription is ended, and can be transferred to the standalone version of Lightroom
Thanks for the response BUT the question refers to the program and updates
rather than the work done. I'm not sure I want to continue a subscription
service beyond the next year or two and I'm not sure I want Photoshop. I'm
happy with Lightroom 5 but the addition of HDR and panoramas is appealing.
What should I do - just upgrade to Lightroom 6 without future updates or
subscribe to the service and cancel after 1 or 2 years?

There will be updates to LR6. If you buy LR6, you can always keep it up to date
What should you do? I dunno, I can't tell you how best to spend your money.
If you go with CC now and then decide later to terminate the subscription, the develop module will be locked and you won't be able to use it. To continue using Lightroom you would need to purchase Lightroom 6 has a standalone product. It's difficult to advise others what they should do. Personally I like the subscription plan. Admittedly, I don't use Photoshop extensively. But I'm glad to have it for when it's needed. I think the subscription plan is well worth the money. It's the trend of the future, and more and more companies are going that way.
