Did you try looking in open recent document under the file menu. If it is there open it and save as to where you want it.
Did you try using the Search feature on your operating system? That's Spotlight on the Mac, don't know what it is in Windows.
i am on a mac and i did try the finder and spotlight and also "open recent document" and it's not anywhere.
it was right in front of me this morning and without thinking, i closed it. no crashes or anything. the other stuff for that client is in its folder on the desktop. does indd have an automatic save place somewhere that i don't know about. i am not sure what i named it, IF i even named it.
not the way i usually work but things have been nuts here.
any other suggestions much appreciated

How about looking in:
Apple menu > Recent Items > Documents
It lists the last 10 documents you've opened.
miracle of miracles, I FOUND IT!
i finally tried a search using 'Last Modified date within" and there it was. i knew i had worked on it this morning.
but it makes no sense. the doc had been saved as "FIRE LAYOUT 5/5, yet when i searched, i used "fire" in the search in both spotlight and finder and it didn't come up. it had landed in the wrong folder.
but i thank you all for your suggestions.
again i ask if there is a "see-able" folder that indd autosaves to, in the event this ever happens again?
and also, is there a preference to have "open recent" show more than the 10 it shows?
doesn't the finder search ALL folders?
thanks so much for your help.

ID does not autosave at all. It saves recovery data in case of improper shutdown, but that data is only usable by ID itself on launch.
aha! ok, and that's why i can't find any folder for it. thank you all for your help, and thank goodness, i found the doc.
