1. Re: how to unlink compositon layers in after effects
Dave LaRonde May 11, 2015 10:17 AM (in response to jeffd30298937)How many levels of nesting are in the template? You'll have to drill down through until you find the proper text layers to change.
I'll assume that when you duped the precomps in the project window, you renamed them and used the Replace Footage command to change the old precomps to the new ones.

Mathias Moehl May 11, 2015 1:34 PM (in response to jeffd30298937)An easy solution would be to
1) create an new, empty project
2) import your template project 2 times into your new project
Now you have two duplicated of the entire template in your project and they are completely independent.
If you just want to duplicate specific comps with their precomps, you can also try True Comp Duplicator

jeffd30298937 May 12, 2015 3:26 AM (in response to Dave LaRonde)Hi Dave, thanks so much for coming back. I didn't use that Replace Footage command, I searched for it and found another post where you
discussed this. I tried to then hold down the alt key and move the comps, but it didn't unlink it. I still can't get this comp levels to unlink.
The original template had 6 comp levels. I then duplicated 5 of them. So now they stack 1 -11
I've drilled into the layers and got to the text but till when I change the text it mirrors in the duplicate comp layer. AE is so frustrating at times!

5. Re: how to unlink compositon layers in after effects
Rick Gerard May 12, 2015 6:08 AM (in response to jeffd30298937)Use the project flow chart and then drill down to the last instance of the text. If that comp is common in all of your other comps then you did not duplicate the nested comps. Simple as that.
Here's a step by step. First open one of the duplicate comps and then choose to view the flow chart. Select the text layer that is giving you problems in the flow chart and drill back to the first instance of that text layer. Reveal that comp in the Project panel and note the name. Go to the project panel and duplicate that nested comp. Now open one of your other duplicate comps and follow the same procedure until you get to the original text comp. Use the replace footage command to replace the original text comp with the copy you just made. Now change the text comp in the duplicate and you'll see that the text in the original did not change.

jeffd30298937 May 12, 2015 7:14 AM (in response to Rick Gerard)HI Rick, thanks for that. I've followed your step by step guide, but when you say 'choose to view flow chart', i select it from the tools window bar but there's nothing in it. It's just a blank screen when I select flowchart, so clueless to where I go from there? ta Jeff

jeffd30298937 May 12, 2015 7:17 AM (in response to Mathias Moehl)Hi Mathias, I've tried to start a new composition and paste in all the elements, but the text is still linking. If I start a new project that means to start a fresh with a new blank window? ta jeff

jeffd30298937 May 12, 2015 8:38 AM (in response to jeffd30298937)Right- I've actually sorted it now! It was a case of duplicating a new text slide and adding that to the new comp and blocking out the old one. I can see how it works now. Thanks to Rick, Mathias and Dave for your help. I have a new problem but will post up a new chat. Thanks again guys, it was very useful advice. Jeff
