Can background processes be turned off?

ACC updated today, and suddenly there are new extra *32 processes in my task manager (including Adobe Desktop Service.exe *32 and CoreSync.exe *32  running in the background even when the app and all applications are closed and quit. AdobeIPCBroker.exe *32 is also there, but it always has been).

I would like to know WHY these are here when they weren't before. And if there is a setting to turn these processes off while Adobe products are not in use? (It may or may not be relevant that I got an Error Code 50 on the ACC app's first update attempt today, but just starting the update a second time completed with no apparent problems)
