Reran import again. At 52.61GB used with only 16% of my library imported. New installation yesterday. Dumped preferences and started with a new catalog.
Sounds like there might be a memory leak in the Aperture migration tool.
Is there an option to migrate smaller parts of the Aperture library instead of the whole thing (asks the Windows user)?
Many, many people have had problems using the Aperture importer plugin, especially with large Aperture libraries. It doesn't appear to have been very well engineered or tested. Some people have had success splitting their Aperture library into smaller chunks. Search this forum and see this topic in the official Adobe feedback forum: Lightroom: Aperture import not working - stuck on "Checking Aperture Library"
Thank you. Now I see why you say numerous folks have had problems with the import.
Although the Aperture library check takes 10 minutes or so when choosing the library and while selecting options, it does eventually return. The problem is during import.
For what it's worth, Adobe support first told me that I need 50% more available space (than library size) on my hard drive, otherwise I'll run out of RAM. Was skeptical, tried that, it didn't work. The next representative I spoke to told me I needed to break my library into chunks, to match the size of RAM on my system. He could not answer whether it was resulting library size, or library and image size. Good thing I have 32GB of RAM, I should only need to break it into 25 pieces. Poor folks with 4 or 8GB of RAM! This stuff reportedly comes directly from their engineering department.
I could break my library into parts, but don't see many people choosing this route. For me, I'd lose links to albums and smart albums. Perhaps I create keywords for these, one by one, for all 1000 or so albums.
But more disturbing, there appear to be comments that Lightroom cannot manage large catalogs anyway! Will post another forum question on that matter.
Lightroom cannot manage large catalogs anyway!
Many people have reported LR successfully managing libraries with hundreds of thousands of pics. Over the years, I haven't seen any credible reports of LR running out of steam due to too many pics.
