I was using Lightroom 5 for a month or two prior to Lightroom 6 and was having no performance problems. My Computer is a 2014 15" MacBook PRo with 16Gb RAM and discrete GPU. When running Lightroom 6, however, the computer temperature runs is extremely hot, CPU load is excessive and battery life (when not plugged into power) literally drops 80%.
I have tried turning graphics acceleration off and it makes no obvious difference.
Try turning off the face recognition feature.
Thanks - amazing! CPU Usage went down from 110% to 9%. So Faces is unusable then! Literally on my Mac the software is unusable when it's turned on
No, it's not unusable, but to use it, it needs to index the catalog. It needs to read every file in the database to see if there are recognisable face regions, and then catalog them. It's particularly CPU intensive, and the time it takes is directly dependent on the number of images in your catalog. If run on import, it gets a semi free ride because it analyzes the image as the previews is being created.
You can opt to have it run when you change source, but like preview creation, it simply takes time.
