Because LR is not multi-user, it does not allow the catalog to be on network drives; the catalog needs to be on an local drive (internal or external).
The images can be anywhere.
I'm not sure I understand. Is there some way to locate the catalog on my local drive even though the photos are on the NAS? How would I go about doing that?
I think you just store your photos on the NAS and then create your catalogue on your internal drive. You then import the photos into the catalogue.
The locations of the catalog and the images are completely independent of each other.
Create the catalog on your internal drive.
Copy the images off your memory cards onto the NAS, organized as you so desire.
Import them into the LR catalog using the "add" option.
(Alternatively, you can have LR do the copying from the memory card onto the NAS during the import using the "copy" option.)
I'm doing the same setup as the original post. Wondering, at what point do we have to start worrying of the catalog size? If we have a local hard drive of say 512GB, but our NAS is of 1TB (or more); how much space do these previous take? I have about 400GB of pics, which I had to move off my Macbook Pro as it was almost full. Now I just loaded LR6, and plan to start using it. Any suggestions?
Your images are not "in" the Lightroom catalog. Your images are on your hard drive(s) just like all your other data files. Lightroom just references them drive+path+filename. As such, your catalog will be megabytes while your images are in the gigabytes or terabytes.
