To upgrade from Version 6 to Version 13, the most recent, quite a few things will need to change for you.

You'll need a new computer, and put 16 GB RAM in it for good AE performance.

You'll need a new operating system -- 64 bit.

Here's possibly the biggest change of all: you can't buy the newest version, you have to rent it.  You can, however, buy AE CS6, aka version 11; there is no lesser upgrade charge for you with your old, old software -- you'll pay full price.  Download only.  No installation disks any more.
