Tethered capture images with the Nikon D7200 ?

    johanl86790902

Is it possible to tethered capture images with the Nikon D7200 in Lightroom cc? if not, will it be possible in the future?

      Best regards

      Johan

LR uses the Nikon SDK for the tethering functionality.

Nikon just added the D7200 to the SDK this month.

Most likely the earliest you will see the functionality in LR is two releases from now.

Adobe does not talk about upcoming features, so it is all just speculation on our part.

I See the latest Lightroom update came out today and still no support for D7200. Very disappointed in Adobe.

              Why? It's Nikon's fault.

most interesting. why is it Nikon's fault. I don't understand if the d7100 can work tethered, and the d7200 is basically the same camera, why would it take over six months to get the D7200 able to shoot tethered?

Canon and Nikon supply application developers with libraries (SDKs) for tethering to their cameras.   LR relies on those libraries; if it didn't, Adobe would have to devote significant extra engineering resources to implementing the libraries itself, increasing the LR license fee or taking away engineering resources from other feature development.

Nikon is slow in adding new cameras to its tethering library.  Further, LR releases come out only once every few months, and before incorporating a new version of the library, Adobe needs to do at least cursory testing on it.  So as ManiacJoe stated, depending on the timing of the Nikon and LR release cycles, it could take a couple release cycles of LR to get a new version of the Nikon library incorporated into LR.

Complicating this is the recent release of OS X, El Capitan.  Unlike responsible application developers, Nikon didn't even start testing its libraries on El Capitan until a week after the public release on Oct 1.  It turns out that its libraries and applications aren't compatible with El Capitan, and Nikon hasn't provided a public date when it will have new compatible versions.  So Adobe can't include the most recent Nikon SDK until that problem is resolved.  (Adobe likes to provide identical functionality across Windows and Mac and different versions of those platforms. While in theory Adobe could include the most recent Nikon SDK for Windows LR and for versions of LR running on older versions Mac, that would cost a non-trivial amount of engineering and customer support, a cost that would be reflected back to the customer as higher license fees or deferred feature development and bug fixes in other areas of LR.)

As John has explained, the issue is primarily with Nikon's tardiness in updating the code it provides to software developers to enable tethering; and the fact that it routinely releases SDK updates out of sync with Lr's update cycle.

If Nikon was prepared to work with Adobe, the two organisations could probably align their update cycles, reducing the lag caused by Adobe needing to add and then test the updated SDK code (Adobe isn't going to accelerate its release cycle just to accommodate a new camera for tethering, incidentally): but because Nikon doesn't work with Raw converter developers, you get the situation Joe describes.

Canon's the same, but the underlying point remains: Adobe's hands are tied by the camera manufacturer's whims.

And (again as John explains), that's before Nikon releases an SDK which won't even work in the latest MacOS release - they broke their own tethering solution by their lack of diligence!

Many thanks for clarifying that for me.  Really appreciate you taking the time. Guess I'll simply need to wait for Nikon.

                      All the best

Interested to hear if/once anyone has any news regarding the support of the D7200 on Lightroom 2015.3. Very much looking forward to a solution. Hard to believe that the SDK is substantially different compared the version for the D7100 as both cameras are almost identical.

Your spamming is getting tedious, Marcel.

Read my last post here: Re: Lightroom ver 6 does not tether to the New Nikon D7200.  When will this be resolved? and let it go.

As of December 9th 2015 Nikon released an updated version of Nikon Camera Control Pro which supports the D7200 and runs on OSX 10.11 El Capitan. It's pure speculation, but this to me indicates that Nikon have managed to resolve the issues they've had with El Capitan.

On the 10th of December Nikon released an updated Nikon SDK with support for the D7200 and other cameras, so hopefully this will unblock the Lightroom team and improve newer camera support. Of course, software is software, it's never just as easy as updating a bunch of files on the developer's end, but a solution is likely right around the corner.

See this topic in the official Adobe feedback forum, especially the post from Adobe employee Simon Chen: Lightroom: Can't use tethering with Nikon and Leica after installing MacOS 10.11 El Capitan

Thanks for the update. Look forward to being able to shot tethered with my D7200 and not my D7000.
