The Flash Player, when hosted by a browser, severely limits access to the host computer's resources. In other words, you cannot read and write files. If the XML resides on the server, then you can either use some server-side code (eg, PHP) and modify the file, or you can load the XML into your Flex application on the client computer, modify it, then send it back to something that can write the file.
mm i suspected that, ah well i'll just have to get familiar with the php xml class.
i do this via an asp script
i have the script update the xml file with paths to newly uploaded images and/or text files that i need to load in flex from the xml
i'll give you the asp script if you want it.
