Adobe after effects cc 3d extrude does not work on my new Mac pro- I have the AMD firepro d300 with 2 gig - but adobe does not enable it - what do i do ? Adobe says I need an NVIDIA card - but Apple says NVIDIA cards won't even plug in to the new mac pro ? is this the truth? am I screwed? I just payed 3200 foa a computer and it can't even do 3Dextrude?
You can use the 3D Raytrace stuff, but in CPU only mode, so it's going to be slow - terribly slow. You better consider buying a 3D plug-in liek Element 3D. This Raytrace stuff is deprecated, anyway, and will no longer be cared for. Any hopes that it will ever use GPU acceleration on your Mac are therefore in vain.
What Mylenium says is true. You can still use it, it will just be slow. But don't bother. It is considered an obsolete feature!
If you want true 3d in AE, use Cinema 4D. It comes for free with After Effects: details of CINEMA 4D integration with After Effects CC
It's more powerful than the ray-traced renderer could ever hope to be.
If you don't need real powerful 3d and just want cool-looking stuff, get a third-party plugin that CAN work on your GPU such as Mettle's ShapeShifter, Zaxwerks 3d Invigorator, or Video Copilot's Element 3d. They all render faster than the ray-traced renderer every could. Element 3d just released a new update the other day and that plugin includes some pretty impressive features these days.
