It happens with every document. I have restarted the app (and the computer) several times since then, but I haven't tried resetting the preferences. I'll give that a try and post the result.
That totally fixed the problem—thanks!
By the end of the workday on Friday, the paths were no longer appearing when hovering. I again reset the InDesign preferences as described in the link above, and the paths were showing again (2:50 p.m. CST). Then at 3:05 pm CST, I notice the paths are no longer showing up when hovering.
I then discovered that if I leave the document open but switch to a different app (like the Finder) and then switch back to InDesign, then InDesign will show me the path of one of the links in the Links palette while hovering—and then quit working again. This has been true for the 3 different documents I've tested in the past few minutes.
So resetting the preferences does briefly fix the problem, but is not the real answer. Any more ideas? I'd like to remove the "Assumed Answered" tag from the original question but I don't know how.
I think you should submit this as a bug to Adobe: adobe.ly/BugReport
I don't know any other way to fix this. So sorry! As an alternative, you can display the the folders in the file path using the Links Panel options.
I also recommend Frame Reporter, by Rorohiko. https://www.rorohiko.com/wordpress/indesign-downloads/framereporter/
It lets you display a bunch of different things about the contents of your frame, including file path. It puts them as non-printing little tags, at the top of your frames.
Thank you so much for your help! I think I will submit this as a bug.
The Links palette's panel options is a good solution for users who have short paths to their links; for me, the palette has to be nearly half as wide as my screen to display the full path because there is no wrapping (such a large palette makes me a unhappy because I only have one monitor).
Thanks again for your thorough and quick response.
I am having the same problem in InDesign CC2015, which I just upgraded to. My yellow pop up boxes showing the full path no longer show up in InDesign when I hover over any of the links listed the Links palette. I checked my preferences, and it's still set to "Tool Tips: Fast.". This was a working feature in my InDesign CS6 version.
Fiddling with the Panel Options does not seem to produce the tool tips I'm looking for.
In Panel Options Link Info I can option-click on the Path to Copy the Full Path and then past it into Text Edit to see the full path, but that is time consuming, versus the old Tool Tips yellow box feature.
I am on a MacBook Pro Retina using OS X 10.10.5.
Can anyone help? Thank you!
hi am having the same experience. Its very random when the yellow hover works and when it doesnt.
Ive been trying to figure out if theres a set of rules or circumstances that cause it. But i cant find any reasoning.
Had two coworkers with this same issue, along with the layers panel failing to display the square dots that enable users to select individual items on a layer and move them between layers etc.
If you navigate to Caches folder on the hidden Library folder found in your user directory, eventually locating the “InDesign SavedData” file, and trashing it (the same way you would normally do for corrupted preferences) — that has been found to near permanently recover these failing indesign features.
“InDesign SavedData” file location:
/Users/username/Library/Caches/Adobe InDesign/Version 11.0/en_US
*While in the Finder, hit “command + shift + G” OR navigate to Finder File menu > Go > Go to Folder... and enter “~/Library” to get to the ‘hidden’ library folder.
Keep in mind this location is for
Indesign CC 11.4.1.
Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11.6
Hope that helps.
