Why is my single column text box automatically formatting text into multiple columns, even though I have the box set for one column?

I am working on a magazine layout and need to create multiple single column text boxes for captions, etc.  The text box feature keeps creating multiple columns within my box even though the box is set to one column.  No matter what I do in the "text frame options" the text is formatted in multiple columns when I want only one.  One box is formatting three columns no matter the size of the box.  It simply "squishes" the text and keeps it in multiple columns.  What am I doing wrong?
