How to make output screen bigger

    sum101 Level 1
      Hi all.

I have used Director for a days now and I was wondering if it was possible to make the output any bigger. I am producing a slide show/ animation/ movie which I will probably export to .mov or .avi file when I have finished. I am hoping to be able to show it full screen on a computer or maybe even a tv.

I can only seem to make a really small output which obviously looses a lot of quality when I enlarge it. I don't know if director is the best program for this project but I would like to stick with it if possible as I am slowly getting used to it!

Can anyone help... I am stuck!!

      Thanks,

      Stu

You could always make your stage bigger to match what output you wish to achieve.

            Hi Stu,

I don't quite understand what you menat by 'making a small output'. With Director,
you generally decide on your output screen size at the start of a project. So, you
may for instance choose a stage size of 800 x 600. It is not easy to convert a
movie already set up at say 800x600 to 1024x768 or for that matter down to 320x240.
Unlike Flash, Director does not scale well oncee you've chosen a size and set up
            your content to those proportions.

I have converted Director animations to video to be seen on a TV. When I did this,
I set up my stage at DVD Pal size - 720 x 576, then exported the frames of the
movie and used another software to endode it into DVD. NTSC is 720 x 480 pixels. If
you want to make a video out of Director content, I'd suggest you export the frames
as an image sequence rather than QT or AVI. This way, you'll maintain 100% quality
and you can use your video editing software to apply the compression and video
            output settings.

Hope that helps. If you'd liek more info, let me know and give more info on what
            you're doing.

            regards

Thanks for the help. It was a bit of a silly question I know!

              Im on my way now.

One last query, thanks for all you help. I changed the stage size to my desired size but when I try to export it to a .mov file the output appears partly off my computer screen and the exporting cuts off some of the output. The dimensions are smaller than my screen so I don't understand why director positions the ouput in this way when exporting.

                Can anyone help??

                  Hi Stu,

AS mentioned, I'd suggest you export your movie as an image sequence (BMP sequence
on Windows/PCT on Mac). Do you have video editing software? If so, you can import
the image sequence in that application and encode it tehre. It will give a better
                  result than exporting from Director.

Let me know if you stiill experience problems.

                  regards

Thank you all for your help, it has been of great use. I am still having the problem of exporting the file. Whether as a .mov or a .bmp sequence when the screen shots appear on my screen they are positioned so that the bottom right corner is obscured. When I view the file(s) this corner is black.

How does director export such files? Is it as a screenshot (apoligies if not using correct terms!)? If so can I re position the output on my screen to avoid the cut off?

                    Hope im making sense!

                    Thanks,

                    Stu

                      Hi Stu,

Not sure why your export is positioning badly. Exporting does do a screen capture
                      of each frame.

I still suggest you export as a bmp sequence. If soemthing strange is happening in
teh positioning, this is lielya setup issue. Can you trty teh following:
Create a new movie with just one still image taken from this file you're trying to
export. Make sureteh stage is set exactly teh same as your first movie. Then go to
export and try export a freame range. Let me know if you have the same obscured
                      corner problem.

I'd expect it to happen. If it does, perhaps you coudl email em taht fiel i I'll
look at it. If it works OK, we can pinpoint what's different.

You can email me directly at d.utian@unsw.edu.au

Thanks for your help Dean, it as really helped me along my way. Unfortunately although I tried the same size output with another file, the same obscured corner arises. Is there some kind of output coordinates I can set somewhere?

I don't want to email you as I feel you have done more than enough already!

                          Hi Stu,

It's actuallya godo thing that teh same problem happened ina new fiel as it
means it's a setting problem. And having it in a clean file will mean it would eb
much easier to locate teh problem. I'd be happy for you to email me and I'll look
                          at the file.

                          regards

In authoring it seems that the Export function wil only show what is visible on the monitor - probably because the parent Director app 'window' can only be as large as your monitor.

In the same place where you changed the movie size, you can change the movie location. Make sure this is set to upper left (0, 0). As long as your movie is smaller than your monitor it should then export OK
