    Advice Needed For System Upgrade

    LaciG Level 1

      Dear Hardware Forum,

I would like to upgrade my 5 year old editing computer (based mostly on Harm’s advice). This system works perfectly, however I recently built a very simple system (I5) for a relative and it is so much faster than my old system that it made me jealous .

      My present system:

            1. Mother Board: ASUS P6X68D Premium
            2. Processor: Intel Core i7 930
            3. Chipset: Intel X58 / ICH10R
            4. Memory: 24 GB (DDR3)
            5. Graphic Card:  MSI GEFORCE GTX 970  (NVIDIA) - recently replaced

        • Mother Board Ports
            • 6x SATA 3.0 Gb/s      to 5 HDs and 1 OD (see point 9)
            • SATA 6.0 Gb/s           to front panel eSATA port
            • SATA 6.0 Gb/s           to front panel hot switchable HDD enclosure

              All disks are 1 TB, 3.0 Gb/s on the 5 SATA 3.0 Gb/s ports.

            • The disk configuration is

              6x SATA 3.0 Gb/s ports:

Port 0: SAMSUNG HD103SJ (boot drive and static data)

Port 5: to LG DVD/ROM Optical Drive

            • RAID ARRAY_0000 (RAID 0) “Work”

              Port 1: SAMSUNG HD103SJ

              Port 2: SAMSUNG HD103SJ

            • RAID ARRAY_0001 (RAID 0) “Scratch”

              Port 3: SAMSUNG HD103SJ

              Port 4: SAMSUNG HD103SJ

            • 2x SATA 6.0 Gb/s ports (MARVELL)

              Port 6G_1: swap drive (front)

              Port 6G_2: front top

      1. New (planned) system
            1. Mother Board: ASUS Sabertooth X79 LGA 211 Intel X79 SATA 6 Gb/s
            2. Processor: Intel Core i7 3930K Hex-core processor
            3. All other components are from the old system (the graphic card was replaced a couple of months ago)

      QUESTIONS:

      1. Does this upgrade makes sense (speed wise)?

      2. Any drive (not all! ) replaced with a SSD would substantially improve performance further?
      3. Any other suggestions?

      Thank you for any advice,

      Laci.

P.S. I apologize for the formatting - it works quite differently from the Office Word with which I am familiar.
