Facing pages vs single pages workflow

Every couple of weeks our organization publishes a 15-20 page policy paper. Posting to our website as .pdfs (no spreads) is the default distribution. However, occasionally a paper is selected for print publication. Has anyone had a similar experience? What is the best workflow experience? Create as if all documents are to be printed and set up as facing pages (which, by design, have different verso and recto headers) and wider outside margins, then convert to single pages with a standard 1" margin all around and address the alternating header information? I experimented with a "print" version, deselected facing pages, but then do I have to apply a single page master to every page?
