"files are on a volume that does not support Trash" message

I have raw images on an older external hard drive. As I edit my images i try to delete from the disk a bad image. I get a message saying that "The files could not be moved to the Trash. The files are on a volume that does not support Trash. Would you like to permanantly delete them?" I don't have this problem/message with my other drives or with lightroom 4. Although I am given a button to permanantly delete files and they do delete when I click on it I am wondering if there is a fix so I don't have to keep re-clicking delete files. When I am editing 7000 images it takes extra time for this delete process. Can someone offer a fix? TY

      PS. Using Mac 10.7.5
