The only trial version there is for Lightroom 6 is the creative cloud version. If you purchased a license for Lightroom 6 then you should have a serial number that was sent to you via e-mail. And you need to activate the creative cloud trial version as a standalone version. Instructions for doing that conversion can be found on the following website. You might have to do some scrolling to find the appropriate situation:
Alternatively, you can download Lightroom 6.1 directly from the following website and enter your serial number. This will require you to uninstall the version you have now:

second step, below, and downloaded 6.1 directly. I am hoping that when I
uninstall version 5 all the photo files now in it will just become part

Lightroom 5 is a completely separate and independent program. It really doesn't need to be removed unless you want to remove it. I use Lightroom 2015 CC, so I'm not familiar with how to convert the trial version to the standalone LR 6.
