Greatly improved for only a couple of effects is all that has been demonstrated. I would not expect dramatic improvements immediately. It will take time to integrate the new graphics processing.
Cool thanks Rick-
Any incompatibilities with plugins, etc?
After Effects 13.5 crashes on startup with 2014 Macbook pro.
El Capitan Beta 5
Do yourself a big honkin' favor and just wait. If you absolutely MUST have the oh-so-new shinies and sparklies because you can't resist anything new, knock yourself out, then tell us what's wrong and describe in detail your still-not-released OS woes.... for an OS that hasn't even been generally released, for crying out loud!
Then we won't make the same mistake you did.
I don't trust ANY software developer to make something that works as the marketing weasels say it will. Not any more! They all over-promise! And if you're stupid enough to believe the hype, you deserve what you get! You will get garbage!

In the Apple keynote it was mentioned that AE performance was greatly improved with this new setup.
To clear up some confusion here, they weren't demonstrating that El Capitan made AE work better. They were demonstrating that certain effects could be significantly accelerated with Metal (which is coming in El Capitan). They were just exploring possibilities. When the new OS launches, AE won't be suddenly faster. Official word here: Apple's Metal 8x faster Rendering?
How to solve this problem?
Latest Beta works for me.
