What about CC (version 12) or CC 2015 (version 13.5)? Do they behave?
What kind of network?
What happens if you create a new project and import the error-prone projects into it?
Unfortunately I have neither of those versions installed here.
I'm on a fibre connection here.
Tried importing it into a new project but still got the same error.
I've also tried copying to the local drive to no avail.
A few other things I've tried is using auto-save projects, previous versions I've saved off, purging image cache, deleting preferences. I was also recently given a new id here to try and get around the issue (the hope being it was my personal login profile that had become corrupted that was causing the issue) and it was fine for a few days but it seems to have returned.
I will look into using an older version. I unfortunately don't have enough access to these systems to be able to do that personally but I'll touch base with IT and see if they can't make that happen.
Make sure, when you chat with your IT folks that if they want to update you to the latest version - CC 2015 - that they need to make sure to leave your current version and don't let it delete it like it defaults to: keeping previous versions installed when installing CC 2015 applications | After Effects region of interest
I'll see if I can't make this happen though I'm worried it'll be weeks before they clear us for CC 2015. It's a rather large company that moves slow on upgrades.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll keep you posted on the results.
