Coincidentally it was 2 days ago I was pompted to update my graphics card driver, surely not the culprit do you think?
Surely, it could be the culprit.
Also, what happens if you turn off the graphics acceleration in Lightroom 6? Does this make the problem go away? (It's under Preferences->Performance)
I can't even switch graphics acceleration off, when I go in there to do it LR crashes
Hi, sorry but I haven't got the foggiest what this is where I access it or what I do when I find it. I'm a moron when it comes to code, tech, wizardry etc, sorry!
Without sounding ungrateful can you explain this like you would a 5 yr old, thanks! I might get it then ;-)
Disabling graphics acceleration worked for me. I updated my AMD drivers last week, and today was the first time I used LR since. Funny thing was I was able to edit 4 or 5 photos, then as I exited develop to library and then back is when it hung. The irony is, prior to my AMD updates, graphics acceleration failed the OpenGL test so I couldn't use it, and now it passes the OpenGL test, but I still can't use it.
Graphics Processor Info:

Thanks everyone, I followed the instructions and disable the gpu setting without the need to open Lightroom, hey presto when I did that lightroom working fine again. Need a new graphics card it would seem!
Develop module is also crashing LR here as well, I think due to the AMD driver update.
Where do we report this to Adobe so they can be aware of a major issue here?
Roger that. Same issue here; updated my AMD R9 290X to July 29th driver version 15.20.1062-150715a-187146C and LR 2015.1.1 crashes on some pictures when entering Develop mode every time and works fine with other photos (in same directory, taken same day). Turned off GPU Acceleration (was able to do it in application) and now it works fine. I'm going to revert back to July 7th driver version 15.7 and see if that is stable again.
