# Do all cpu cores run at 4ghzs each or the sum of the speeds of cpu cores is 4ghz

the cpu cores are running each at individually 4 ghz speed as 4+4+4+4=16 ghz or the cpu 4 ghz speed is speard over the all cores as a combined speed as 1+1+1+1 =4 ghz can anyone clarify

What has clock speed to do with the number of cores? You do not understand something very fundamental here...

The clock speed ie 4GHz is per core and the raw clock speed of the CPU.

means 8 cores= 8*4=32ghz total if the cpu is 100% utilized?

If you have a motor bike that can do 50 mph it will take 1 hour to move one person 50 miles. If you have 8 of the same motor bikes it will still take 1 hour to do the 50 miles but you will be able to move 8 people. The same with cores, they all run at the same speed but they work in parallel so you get 8 times as much data processed in the same time.

that is a fantastic explanation, the total 4ghz will be same but the no of times will be depends on cores having to cpu which don't reflex on total speed, but the multiple parallel speeds of 4ghz cpu. got it thanks a lot Richard for taking time to explain

How well the cores are used depends on the way the program is written. The program has to split the tasks to use each core and then put all the data back together at the end. If a program can only make use of, say, 4 cores, if you use a 6 core i7, two of them will not be used. In that case a faster clock speed will be of more use than lots of cores.
