Transfer of books from computer to e reader

I have purchased 4 books and downloaded them onto my computer.   When I try and transfer them to my Sony e reader the device does not appear on the left side in Adobe Digital Editions so I cannot drag the books across to transfer them to the e reader.  What should I do?
