I just installed Flash 18 on a server with Windows 2008 R2. It did not create an mms.cfg file. Why not?

Hi TomG512,

Flash Player creates the mms.cfg file at installation time to set the users selected update option (Background Update, Notify an update is available, or do not update).  The content debuggers that you have installed do not have the capability to be updated automatically (either via Background or Notification) and can only be updated manually, therefore, they do not create the mms.cfg file at installation time with the update settings.  You will need to create the file manually and add whatever settings you need to it, with the exception of update options as these do not apply to the content debuggers.

Is this new? We have been using the exe installers for several releases of Flash, and this is the first time we have seen this.

Does the installer create the file if it has no settings to put in it?

Hi,

No, this is not new.  The content debugger EXE installers (which you are using based on the file name you provided) and the MSI installers do not create the mms.cfg file.  They also do not modify update settings in the mms.cfg file if it exists.  You may have been using the non-content debugger EXE installers (which do create the mms.cfg file) in the past.  Content debuggers are primarily used by Flash developers to debug their code as they display alert dialog windows to otify developers of issues with their code.  These generally aren't used by enterprise customers or non-developers  as the alert dialog windows negatively impact the viewing experience.

Are you distributing Flash Player within your organization?  If so, you should have received an email with the URL to download the installers (either EXE or MSI) when you applied to license Flash Player for distribution.

We use the exe installers because we need an offline installer.

I was mostly concerned that the installer was not executing correctly, since we had the mms.cfg in the past but didn't have it recently. Apparently, we are OK with that so I think my problem is solved.
