Do you opened LR with an other catalog?
Possibly .... sorry I am still learning Just can't understand where all my images have goneHow do I see what catalog I am in?
All your images are exactly where you put them. LR is just a Database program. It does not do anything to your actual images.
In the preferences what do you have set in the General Tab, Default Catalog area?
did you actually import your images into LR?
In preferences, general, default it is set to My pictures - which is where I have exported my edited images to - My images from where I have imported and exported are both still stored on my computer hard drive - under picturesAm just not sure why I can't see this files in Lightroom anymore?
It sounds like you opened a New Catalog. In the preferences it should be set to "Load Most Recent Catalog".
Do a search of your drives for .lrcat (that is a L not an i) and see if there is more than one LR Catalog file.
If you find more than one you will need to open each to see if one of them is where you imported your images.
Thanks for your help - but am not getting anywhere ( I have no clue what I am doing)There seems to be only one catalog ....
It looks like my only catalog was created today - when I have been using lighroom for several weeks....
Can you recover a deleted catalog?
Start a search on your Computer with " *Lrcat" and then open the catalogs in result one by one
Else look up in Pictures>>Lightroom>>Lighroom Catalog.Lrcat. and Pictures>>Lightroom>>Backup>>Lightroom catalog
Okay - I think I know what has happened but still not sure how to sort it.
I have tried to open up my back up catalog and it says that it is not writable and can not be opened....

3.Backup your Lightroom catalog by copying Pictures>>Lightroom>>Lightroom Catalog.lrcat(default location) to desktop.
Then reset Lightroom Preferences by Holding down CTRL+ALT+SHIFT while starting Lighroom and select "Yes
Then open the backup catalog from Desktop
