InDesign CS6 "place" command view options

I hope this is just a setting that I don't know about and not an insurmountable thing. When I use the "place" command and look for the file I'd like to place, the columns available to sort by are "name" and "last opened," the latter being mostly filled with "--" characters and therefore, useless. I can't sort by file type, date created, or last changed, making it a time consuming task just to find the file to place.

Sometimes files are named similarly and I want a particular version, or a client sends a file and it's named like ten others I have already. Is there a "view" options setting I just don't know about?
