    Fireworks8 to Dreamweaver8 bridge

    zr1randy
Hello everyone, thanks for giving help to us new kids. This is my first attempt with any of this, so hope I don't bore you all. I have been using the Total Training DVD on Website Design and it is really great for a beginner. I looked around for some previous posts that might deal with my problem on the forum, but don't see any.

I have about 20 web pages built and linked, and working pretty good - but now when I try to edit my .dwt file from DW into Fireworks, I get a message that some internal error occurred - or - "file cannot be found", and the edit is cancelled. I tried the edit in FW again, (and changed one popup button successfully to a swap in the slice in FW) - and it appeared to work when I clicked the DONE button --and back to Dreamweaver with no warnings. But when I test the page, it still has the popup feature on rollover button in DW8. I can live without the popup feature I originally put on one button, and just make it a simple rollover instead.

I also tried to edit my old .htm file with a bridge to FW, but that gets the same results.

I may have moved my original .png file/ .htm file that Dreamweaver exported the very first time and I built my .dwt file with. I was cleaning stuff up in Windows explorer, and quickly clicked UNDO when I thought I might have moved the .png file and / or .htm file. The .htm file still appears where it was now, and I can load it into DW, but cannot get FW to accept it back again. Is there a way to change the button from popup to simple rollover or something in DW without bridging to Fireworks? Or maybe I can get the working DW 8 .dwt file into FW 8a different way and edit that way? I still have my .dwt file and the linked pages that seem to work fine, and my website should have minimal changes over time, so I don't really care if I can't use FW again for this webpage site.

Thanks a million and Happy Holidays.

I can't work backwards from the Fireworks .png file either. I tried to just re-export the old .png file to Dreamweaver and start at that point. I hate to start all over for the third time - you know.

Thanks a lot if you can give me any help.

What does this mean? FW is not an HTML editor - it's a graphics editor.

And, you really should not use FW to write your HTML anyhow. Use it to make
your graphics, and use DW to write HTML. You'll get on so much better if
          you do it that way.

Thanks for the reply Murray, but I must not have used the right words. Sorry.
I do not mean that I am trying to write html in FW - I made several menu buttons on my page in FW8, created slices for each, made most of them swap image types, but one was made a pop up menu which I want to get rid of, and make that one the same swap image or simple rollover button like the others.
My problem is getting FW to coordinate the page as it used to with DW8. What I meant by EDIT, is the EDIT button that comes up at the bottom of the DW page properties window after I click outside the page in an open area and drag into the page - the properties window then shows the Fireworks Table view, and one can click the EDIT (FW) button at the bottom and transfer the DW page into FW, so I can edit slices and other FW things. When editing is done, I click on DONE in FW and it saves the file and sends it back to DW with the changes.
Did I say that right? I really apologize since I have never touched any software like this until 3 weeks ago. I learned from the DVD total training course and a few missing manual books.

Images are images. To make them have such effects, you need to write HTML.
You have used FW to do that.

If you want to get rid of everything, just use the images without the
accompanying HTML in DW. Graphic pixel data contains none of this behavior
              information.

And never use the DW/FW pop-up menus! There are much better ways....

                Murray,
thanks for the reply again. Since I am so new, can you tell me how to get DW to change what I have since I can't get the same file back into DW? It may be easy for you experienced folks, but I truly have no clue. Sorry to be so dense, but remember we all have to start learning somewhere along the line.

And what other better ways for pop-ups are you referring to? Do you mean things I can get from Adobe Exchange or something?
                Happy Holidays

Use FW to create your graphics. Use DW to construct the HTML infrastructure
that will hold those graphics in place. Most likely you will want to start
learning how to do this by learning how to work with tables in HTML - visit
the link to the DW FAQ in my signature and run through the table tutorials
                  at that location.

For a better way to do those menus, I'd recommend this -

Thank you Murray - that is a wonderful site - is it yours? I will spend some time at the DW/FAQ site you gave me. I appreciate your patient kindness to me.

I thought more about your previous email and took a look at the code I had in DW for the buttons. I changed the table part for the pop-up part of the button and copied the same part from the previous swap image button and pasted it in place - and it worked! Thanks for suggesting it.
