Importing Photoshop files with Alpha Transparency

When I create an image in Photoshop for use in Director that includes alpha transparency, like a drop shadow, the transparent area renders lighter than it should once imported into Director. When displayed on a white background, it isn't too much of a problem; the shadow is just lighter than it should be. When displayed on a dark background, however, what should be a shadow becomes a lighter glow.

I have found that saving images as PNGs, rather than as Photoshop files, solves this problem. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of a fix?
