Help? Choosing the Best Global Mapper Vector Export for InDesign CS6

    kellybellis Level 1

      Imortable-file-types-into-InDesign.png

The GIS application Global Mapper offers an extensive array of vector export options; however, the list of InDesign Importable file types has me asking this question: What is the best choice of vector export from Global Mapper destined for an InDesign document without additional intermediary steps; e.g., involving ai?

Initially after reading on this subject, it sounded as if EPS might have been best, but alas, EPS is not on GM's export list (yet). Windows EMF (Enhanced Meta File) is; however, I'm presently not seeing it listed during export from Global Mapper v16.2 b072415.

Thank you very much for any suggestions.

      Kelly

We know what InDesign can and can't do. What can Global Mapper export?

The only choices on that list the ID can read are Windows emf and jpeg, and I wouldn't use either one. Best is probably to bite the bullet, save as .dwg, and convert in Illustrator.

I'm presently not seeing EMF listed during export from Global Mapper v16.2 b072415 (the application itself) though it is listed on Blue Marble's reference page (linked above).

Adding Illustrator into the workflow was hoped to have been avoided; largely in part, because I wondered if GM's existing long list might already include an ideal vector format that InDesign recognized but by another name. Another reason of avoiding Illustrator was to simply not add additional steps in the production of this book of maps being contemplated.

Yes, and so far in preliminary tests, with nice results that are editable in Illustrator. Next to see how multiple scripted exports can be composited; i.e., registered layers, in InDesign.

I didn't see PDF in the list, so I didn't mention it, but that would be the first choice for direct placement in ID. Illustrator is not a general purpose PDF editor, though, so opening the files there could be a problem.
