Alright obviously I rebooted, it still won't work, I didn't think I had to specify that.

Are you opening AE by double clicking a project file, or are you launching the application fresh?
If you are opening AE by opening a project, and your project is corrupt, it may be crashing as its attempting to render something when you open it. Try to launch AE alone from your start menu/applications folder/etc. If that works, you know it is a problem with your project.
If that is the case and you still need to salvage your project, try opening the project with caps lock enabled - this will prevent it from attempting to render which may keep it from crashing and let you try to turn off some layers, etc and figure out what is causing the crash.
Also, if your workspace is all discombobulated, you can reset it by clicking the menu option "window" and look under workspace> where you will see a handful of default workspaces you can reset it.
Hey thanks for you suggestion, yes I tried opening AE fresh and it still didn't work. I did fix it though, by updating cs5 with the bug fix Adobe provided.
