Command D vs. Drag & Drop for placing Word Docs in InDesign

I have a question about placing Word Documents in InDesign. There are two methods I have used to place Word Docs. Dragging the file from my desktop or a folder into a text box, or typing command +D, navigating to the file and opening it. The results between these two methods vary widely with the same Word Doc file. Can anyone explain to me what the difference is between these two approaches "under the hood" and why the results are so different?
