I've got my own domain where I host photoalbums for myself and my relatives. Some of these are connected to genealogy. I've become more and more aware of Lightroom as a tool for handling my photos, and with the addition of facial recognition now, it's time to start using it as my main tool for handling photos, both on and offline. But, I need my online albums to be accessible for registered users, with the ability to comment and possibly also edit photo descriptions and tags. Is this at all possible? Would I need a plugin for this?
That's nothing to do with Lightroom. How much web design knowledge do you have? Doesn't your web provider have a management page that lets you password protect individual folders? So you'd do the gallery in Lr and then upload it to those folders. Do you have Lightroom CC - you could sync collections of photos to LrMobile and people can then see/comment via their web browsers.
Lots of ways to do this.
