Lightroom 6 crashes when opening Preferences | Windows

    sebastiang.

Any advise to open preferences without LR6 crashing? (German: Bearbeiten / Voreinstellungen)

My LR6 crashes immediately when I click on the button to open preferences....

The proposed solution here doesn't work: https://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/lightroom-crashes-opening-preferences-win.html

LR also crashes when I try to open "System Information" menu within "Help" ...

My System and the windows error messages / reports:

In addition, to edit the "Lightroom 6 Preferences.agprefs" as recommended on the following site is unfortunately not possible, as no line out of 453 lines in my file contains "autobahn":

Turning off Lightroom’s GPU preferences even when crashing on startup. | Lightroom Blog

            Frank Portell

I had the same problem in Win 10.  Here's the short answer:

            1) Start Windows in "Safe Mode" then launch Lightroom and set your preferences and any time you want to change a preference (which would be rare) just do it in windows safe mode:

            2) Long answer:  In Windows there is a feature for selectively starting up software during the computer's startup.  Just do a search for "Selective Startup" it's available in all versions of windows but is found in different places.  Uncheck (disable) startup of anything that isn't from microsoft.  See if it works.  If it does go back to selective startup and add some more items until Lightroom begins to crash. Through trial and error you'll figure out what it was. In my case I didn't bother finding the exact cause but there was some old software installed by my printer that was loading during startup and I suspect that so I just left it disabled and my printer is working fine.

              Hi Johnrellis,

yes, I tried this as well, because before the preferences file was just about 10 lines of code and after I renamed it more code came into it, but not the option "autobahn" to decide for HW acceleration.

Can someone please post the full section I need to add to the preferences file to decide on HW acceleration. Maybe this will prevent crashing?

                  Hi sebastiang,

                  I hope you are fine.

Step 1: Try updating graphics card drivers directly from the manufacturers website, link to do that

                  http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect

Step 2: Hold Windows key + R key at the same time and type temp, click ok and delete all the data in there(make sure you do not have any of your personal data in there), and also empty %temp%

Step 3: If the above steps do not work for you, then you need to change graphics settings to Standard VGA in graphics card properties from device manager

                  • open device manager
                  • Expand Display drivers
                  • Right click on Intel HD graphics
                  • Click on update Driver software
                  • Select Browse my computer for driver software
                  • Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers
                  • and now select Standard VGA

                  Snap shots attached-

Note- Right click on Intel HD graphics (mine is AMD), you will see Intel

                  update Graphics card.PNG

                  update Graphics card- 2.PNG

Note - Click on Let me pick from a list of device drivers

                  update Graphics card- 3.PNG

Step 5: Now try opening Preferences of LR and Disable use Graphics card option in Preferences - performance

Step 6: Hit the return/enter key and close LR

Step 7: After completing the above steps make sure to revert to the regular properties of Graphics card.

Step 8: Open LR again and test it by opening preferences and working on it.

Note - Mow again go back to device manager and revert to the original properties of your Graphics card drivers.

Please let us know if this helps

                  Regards

Hi Arkash, Hi Rohit, Hi Frank,

first of all thanks for your detailled support!

                    1) In Win 10 Safe Boot Mode I could finally open LR, enter Preferences and deactivate GPU acceleration. After normal boot I can still open preferences ;-)

                    2) Now the "Lightroom 6 Preferences.agprefs" has more lines of code 778 (compared to 453 lines of code before) and includes the parameter "AutoBahn".

                    3) I have my VGA driver on latest version and also reinstalled it, etc the last days to hopefully get access to preferences in LR6, but it didn''t work. Yet I didn't try to deactivate the latest driver from Intel and to activate the default from Windows. I'll play with this and give feedback later.

I am specifically looking or Dedicated Video memory, which in case of Lightroom should be 1024 MB

Also try updating the graphics card drives, if it meets the minimum system requirement -

                          Hi sebastiang,

See the minimum system requirement is 1024 MB or 1GB and yours is only 64 MB which does not meet the minimum system requirement

                          minimum system req.PNG

So in order to use graphics card in LR you will have to purchase a better graphics card with a minimum VRAM of 1 GB or 1024 MB

                          Regards

Rpandita, thanks for the detailed answer.  I too have the same 64MB on a laptop (using an external monitor though).  So yes my safe start work around seems to work but ultimately I need a much better graphics card.  I wish that Lightroom displayed such a message during install, or disabled certain features automatically if not meeting system requirements and greyed out those features. Maybe  a suggestion for software engineers. Thanks
