I need to take files someone created in AI and convert them to INDD. This is a manual and for some reason they were designed with 10 AI files with 2 pages within each artboard. So I need to create a INDD book, but I need the objects to be editable within the new files. The place function doesn't seem to be doing anything as it imports as a flattened image. The copy/paste function doesn't seem to work as the text becomes outlined.
Is there any way (without buying 3rd party software) to import the AI files into INDD with the text maintaining its native editing capabilities?
No. Place them and use edit original from the contextual menu when right clicking.
You can select just the text and copy/paste. It will lose formatting, but it will be editable. I'd remove it from the .ai files after, or put it on its own layer so you can hide it, and place the .ai files rather than trying to paste the other content.
I thought this may be my only option, would won't lend itself to the translation company. Looks like it'll have to be recreated with Peter's suggestion.
I was hoping to save some time but oh well. This should be a built in feature!
