    Database probe

For some unknown reason, we have a SQL 2000 server that ocassionally hangs (approx. once a month). Is there an elegant way to probe a database connection to make sure it's up and running and that the database isn't hung up? We are currently on MX 6.1.

My goal is to spit users out to a "Site down" template when the db fails or when the db is hung up and won't respond. As far as http requests go, we currently have a similar process that checks a basic template from the load balancer. If the load balancer doesn't see the template or can't receive the request, then it shuts down that IP to the server.

How do you folks solve this kind of issue in your environment?
Any pointers/code/links are greatly appreciated! Thanks!
