I have an InDesign document with placed AI files. Because of the setup of the AI files, what I am placing in to ID the placed files is generally on artboard 3 or higher.
If I want to replace a placed file, I'd like to be able to drag the new file from the Finder onto the existing graphic in ID, but whenever I do, it is replaced with artboard 1, not the same number artboard as was previously contained.
Is there a way to change that behavior so drag and dropping replaces a graphic with the same number artboard?
Hope that makes sense. Thanks!

I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is no. As you've seen the Place function (drag/drop or otherwise) defaults to artboard 1 (actually PDF page 1) unless you intervene though the Import Options dialog. The page number of the original link only comes into play when you invoke an update of the existing link.
