if you use var to prefix your variable, it's local to the function and nothing will change that.
a work-around would be to pass the variables value to another function.
That would work if I weren't trying to do something on a timeline. But I
guess the best way to do it would be to define all of the variables up-front
on the timeline and then I can reference them inside and outside of
